MOTORISTS' RIGHTS

(To the Editor.) Sir,—About a couple of weeks ago I was driving my car along Cuba street, on" rather congested at times. I had stopped;* then when I moved forward 2£in n pedestrian stepped off the footpath, about thirty yards in front of the then moving car, and walked deliberately straight into the ear. I said, "You might have kept to the footpath" He turned back, and thrusting his face into the car, replied, It s more than you will dare to hit me." I would have had no time to signal a following car, which may have crashed mto and over me, maiming, oc even killing, my wife and myself. Mr. Editor, this sort of thing—it is frequent from inquiries—should receive attehtion from the authorities. The motorist is ever to blame, the non-motorist an inoffensive victim. Yet, ought not the car owner to have right of roadway and som<* sort of protection, against fools and their" folly—l am, etc., A LICENSED KILLER, 4

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Since arriving in Wellington with a car I have seriously -wondered as to why I have to pay £2 for a license—for what? 5a for a driver's license—why? And £1 10s for the Hutt road "license"—l don't own'property in the Hutt Valley. In days when iron-tired carriages rattled over the roads were the owners called upon to pay £3 17s 6d each year? And if so, for what purpose? Could it be similar to the one for which motorists pay their money? Would another 10s tacked on io the above bo the limit? Finally, can anyone say whether or not Wellington mo*tonsts are an easy-goiug lot, willing to pay up when bidden, hoping for the best.—l am, etc., UP TO THE KECK.
