Mr. P. Elworthy was a passenger by the Manuka from the South to-day.

Dr. E. Maraden, permanent secretary of the Scientific and Research Department, left for the South last evening.

Mt. F. Tapley, Christehurch manager of Dominion Motors, Ltd., was a guest at the Eotary Club luncheon to-day.

For the fifth year in succession, Mr. F. "W. Vosseler was elected president of the Tararua Tramping Club last evening.

Mr. George A. Dawson, who has been visiting Melbourne and Sydney,l returned to Wellington by the Makura yesterday.

•.The Secretary of the Labour Department (Mr. F. W. Bovdey) is at present on an official visit to the South Island, but is expected to return to Wellington about the end of the week.

Mr. Leo Dv Chateau returned from Australia yesterday by the Makura to make arrangements for the New Zealand season of the Polish pianist, Ignaz Friedman.

Mr. P. C. Harrison, manager of the San Francisco branch of the Bank of Montreal, and Mr. A. S. Minnion, manager of the foreign department of the bank, arrived from Vancouver by the Aorangi on Sunday.

The death of Mr. A. H. Whittingham, one of Queensland's most prominent pastoralists and sportsmen, is announced by • a Press Association message from Brisbane. Mr. Whittingham was born in Dunedin in 1869.

Mr. E. D. Hill, who had the misfortune' to break his leg when returning from searching for Messrs. Diedrich and Scanlon in tho Tararuas, is making good progress towards recovery, and it is not thought likely that he will suffer any permanent effects from the mishap.

Sir. H. D. Edwards was, at the meeting of tho Wellington Accountant Students' Society on Thursday last, elected a life member "in appreciation of tho signal services he has rendered to the society over a.period of twenty years."
