WAGONS OVER BANK
GOODS TRAIN DERAILED

T, in a m'le t0 the nortl) of Upper cOl, X alraers a cutting in the vicinity of M Gregorys tunnel was the scene o£ a derailment to the goods train from Falmerston yesterday afternoon. Five wagons dropped over the bank at the side of the railway line and three others came off the track. The -accident, the ca^ of which has not yet been ascertained, occurred about 3 o'clock. The first express from the north was delayed for several hours, and did not reach Dunedin until 9 o'clock. The derailment occurred on one of many curves. An empty wagon near the engine left the rails, dragging the others, with the result that the couplings broke, and six wagons rolled down into the gully. The engine and tender remained on the lino, as well as the back portion of the train, which included one carriage with the Anderson Bay School football team. The through express from Christchurch, timed to arrive at 4.18 p".m v was heH up four hours at Purakanui while the line was cleared, and did not pull out for Invereargill till 9.15 p.m. The cause of the derailment is unknown. There will be a departmental inquiry this week.
