Rugby football locally on' Saturday afternoon was badly affected by an unpleasant change in the /weather. With rain falling heavily and a biting southerly prevailing, the conditions were all against •bright play, and for the most part the games were scrambly, footxwork being the main: order. A greasy and heavy leather made. handling very difficult, but even so the backs on occasions endeavoured to rise above the conditions, in some cases to fairly good effect; Generally, however, the play was loose. Old Boys were at sea against Athletic at Athletic Park, although they, plugged away successfully enougK to make Athletic strive their hardest to win. The Petone-Poneke clash at Petone was a strenuous struggle in the mud, the home team gaining the verdict. Marist and Wellington had a keen tussle on Newtown Park, and finished up with honours easy. On the same ground University scored well from Oriental, as did Bethampore from.Hutt at the Hutt Recreation Ground. •-".-■■
Results of the day's games leave Petone and University in the lead for the senior A championship, though Old Boys and Berhampore, with a game in hand, are only two points behind, as also are Athletic, who have missed no game. Poneke are in close attendance. The first five teams on the ladder have all had two losses. Championship points are as follow:—Petone 11, University 11, Old Boys 9, Berhampore 9,' Athletic 9, Poneke 8, Oriental 7, Wellington 6, Jlarist 5, Hutt
'In the senior B grade matches on Saturday surprises were the order of the day. Eastbourne had their first reverse of the season, being beaten by University, who had previously failed to register a win. Johnsonville (second on the list) went down to Porirua, and Selwyn fell to Oriental. Training College scraped home by a point from Athletic.
