MR. COATES STILL IN CHARGE

J. Rolleston, who'carried but the duties attaching to the office during Mr. Coatos's absence.

It has been noticed that since Mr. Coates's return, while he personally has been attending to the more important official administrative duties, Mr. Bolleston has continued to sign documents as Acting-Minister of Railways, and this has given rise to an impression that Mr. Coates was retaining the assistance of hi 3 colleague with a view to handing over to him the full charge of the -p'ortfolioj thus relieving himself of part of the work which devolves upon him in addition to Prime Ministerial matters. •

In reply to a question to-day, the Prime Minister stated that other Ministers were sometimes asked to sign documents on his behalf. ■ ■ :

When it was suggested that the fact that apparently Mr. Rollestoh was still carrying on presaged his definite appointment to administer the portfolio, Mr. Coates; declared, "Oh, no, I am Btill Minister of Railways."
