FLAG DISPUTE
SOUTH AFRICA'S QUEST
A NEW: DESIGN
GOVERNMENT PROPOSALS
(United Press Association.—Copyright^ (Received 18th June, 11.30 a.m.)
CAPETOWN, 17th June,
South Africa's flag trouble is again acute owing to the failure of the Select Committee to arrive at an agreement as to the design of the national flag. Tho Government is now prepared to amenl the Bill and have a referendum taken, on a new design consisting of the flag brought to South Africa by Van Biebeck with a shield centre embodying the Union Jack and the Free State and Transvaal Republican flags in their entirety, with four stars representing the four provinces. The Union Jack will occupy the; left-hand top corner of the', shield. '
The proposal has been rejected by the Opposition because it is . against their consistent policy that the Union Jack and the Republican flags must bo an integral part of the national flag and not put on a small badge. The country is again faced with intensive campaigns. The Government states it is still prepared to fly the Union Jack officially on four days of the year, representing its Imperial connection.
