DISCUSSES TRADE

OVERSEAS DEPARTMENT

RETENTION DESIRED

(United Pres» Association.—Copyright.) (A.P.A. and "Sun.")

LONDON, 16th June.

In the House of Lords Viscount Elibank moved a motion urging the Government to reconsider the abolition of the Overseas Trade Department, expressing the opinion that a majority of foreign traders favoured the retention of this most useful Department, which cost only 1 per cent, of England's overseas trade. Lord Arnold, in supporting the motion, said the only place where real economies could be made was in regard to armaments. Lord Salisbury said the Government fully realised the usefulness of the Dopartment, but must economise and could not recede from its Budget policy. Earl Beauchamp, speaking in support of the Government, said the value of the Department would be increased, not decreased, by the amalgamation with the Board of Trade. Tho motion was withdrawn.
