COUNTY PALATINE

VISIT TO DURHAM

(By "Not Out.")

Before meeting any more of the first-class counties tho New Zealand cricketers will have.a series of minor matches, several of which will be in Scotland. To-day they »re due to make an appearance against Durham, ut Sundcrland, and they will be meeting the representative of the county palatino at Cheßter-le-Streot, where exten» sivo alterations have been made ho tho ground. The match will bo of two days' duration.

Durham is tho champion minor county, tho second-class competition being won very convincingly last season. Tho county's splendid record was largely due to tho fact that it had little occasion to cop and change the players. Durham went through the season without a defeat, and six of its matches were won outright. Tho batting standard was much higher than in tho previous season, and it was moro consistent. The bowline department, wag greatly strengthened by the inclusion of two recently qualified professionals, A. L. Ho well (brother of the' Warwickshire fast bowler) and J. Cook, while another professional in J. Carr was again of great service with the ball as well as with the bat. T. K. Dobson was a useful all-rounder, and M. Niohol and L. H. Weight were outstanding batsmen. .

In H. C. Ferens, Durham possess h fine wicket-keeper nnd an excellent opening batsman. Ho is second in command to H. Brooks, a very capable captain. It was hoped at the start of tun presunt season that T. Kinch, former captain, would bo able to turn out regularly, and if C. L. Adamson, H. Gibbon, and J.-Kelsall were ablo to turn out again, it was * not likely'that thero would be many vacancies to fill in the county eleven. In reserve, howover, there «re some really good players, notably W. H. B. AWerson, W. R. Bomaines, and J. T. Webster (wicket, keeper).
