ECONOMIC CONFERENCE
DEALING WITH ITS DECISIONS
GENEVA, 17th June, me outstanding incident at to-day'a meeting of tho Council of the League of Nations was Sir Austen Chamberlam's knocking the bottom out of a motion moved by Dr. Stresemann calling on the several Governments to give effect to the resolutions passed by the Economic Conference.
Dr. Stresemann reviewed the work of the Conference, dwelling on the recommendation that the time had arrived to check the increase in tariffs, and even .move in the opposite direction. He stressed, the moral obligation on the part of. the Powers to sec the resolutions carried out. Whether with tbo object of embarrassing his colleagues or otherwise this would certainly havo been the effect.
■ Sir Austen Chamberlain succeeded in watering down the motion to commending the valuable report for the consideration of the Governments. The Council, which generally was more enthusiastic, agreed, but resolved that the Ecqnomic Committee begin the study of the resolutions regarding Customs tariffs without delay. The Council referred the German request for a seat on the Mandates Commission to the Commission itself, to report thereon.
