CANTEEN FUNDS
DISTRIBUTION OPPOSED
LITTLE BENEFIT LIKELY
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, Tliis Day. The secretary of the Canteen Trust Fluid, replying to a question by Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., as to whether any consideration is being given, to tho distribution, of canteen funds according to service, or on similar lines to tho war gratuity, says that if such a distribution woro decided upon it would only avorage 30s for each of tho 112,000 men of the N.Z.E.F., whilo the cost of distribution would be very considerable. Thousands who would receive it would not need it, and to those really in need the amount would be. negligible. Tho experience of previous wars showed that there was a real need of such a fund many years after the end of the war. A portion of the interest earned was now being used for the education of children of deceased and disabled soldiers. Tho board was considering the question of using the remainder of the interest to relieve unemployment among ex-soldiers under the administration of tho Returned Soldiers' Association.
