Evening Post") AUCKLAND, This Day. A sensational affair took place, about midday yesterday in a house situated on Great South road, EHerslie. Detective Nalder and Acting-Detec-tive Power had occasion to interview a man named Athol George Beamish White. It is alleged that when both officers went into the room White, picked up a gun and shot at Detective Power, tho bullet narrowly missing him.- Detective Nalder immediately seized White and took him to the City Police Station, where he was charged with attempting to murder Detective Power. , • ' White, who is. 25.years of age, ap. peared before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court in the afternoon. Accused had a startled look on his face. ■'• ■■-.-. Chief-Detective Cummings asked for a remand, until to-day. ■VVhite then said: "I thought he was trying to put me back in the asylum. That's why I tried to murder him; that's as good as murdering me to put me back in the asylum.". Diomede expires in October next. Captain Ritchie is at present in command of H.M.S. Dunedin, now en route from England to 'New Zealand.
