CARS IN BRITAIN
TWELVES MOST POPULAR
The census of mechanically propelled vehicles at Home for 1926, prepared by the Ministry of Transport, provides the opportunity for contrasting the numbers of vehicles in use in certain areas. In London proper the greatest number oi private cars were in use, the number being 70,496. In th adjacent counties the figures were: Middlesex 28,588, Surrey 27,413, Kent 21,22 i Essex 17,307, Sussex 14,020, Herrfordnire 9125, and Buckinghamshire 6492. So that in London and these seven adjacent counties there were in 1925 124,670 private cars out of a total for the whole of Great Britain of 686,232. Of the other counties, Yorkshire led with 30,795 and Lancashire followed with 21,795. Of the provincial towns, Birmingham led '.with 16,183, Manchester followed with 9747, Leeds was next with 7198, Bristol next with 6535, while Liverpool had 6344. The smallest number of private cars licensed in any county borough was 458, at Bootle. The smallest number of cars licensed in any county council in Great Britain was 76,: at Bute.
It is possible from this census to see what are the most popular motor-cars in actual use on the road in Britain, and the figures as a whole are very,interesting. The following summary gives an index to popularity:—
