HUTT ROAD FINANCE

MR. BENNETT'S COMMENT

Commenting upon last night's discussion by the Wellington Automobile Club on Hutt road finance, Mr. 11. D. Bennett remarked to-day that if tho City and Suburban Highways Board decided to work along- the lines of increased fees he had no doubt whatever that tho board could arrange for a meeting of the payers of these fees. Another thirteen miles of paving was at stake, and this could only be done if money is provided. Ho. did not think that motorists would let it slide for tho sako of 10s per year, although, he could readily appreciate a feeling that such a toll should bo resorted to only when other moans fail. Mr. Bennett said ho thought that he hail already made it clear that the board had committed itself to nothing up to tho present. All that has been done was to place certain facts beforo tho board enabling it to consider the position at another meeting. Tho rjrovisions in the Bill now filed are really tentative only and allow of compliance with regulations.
