PROTECTION FOR FARMERS
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") CHKISTCHURCH, This Bay. , The Christchurch Chamber of Commerce last night discussed a resolution disapproving of tho demands made by the farmers, both in Australia and Now Zealand, for embargoes or prohibitive duties between two countries on tho direct products of the! land. The support of other chambers was asked in requesting tho New Zealand Government to continue to improve upon the leciproeal tariff now in force. "Is this not another attempt to get out of the butter mess?" asked Mr. Machin, when tho resolution- was' considered. "Or to get out of the wheat mess?" remarked Mr. T. F. Gibson. •Mr. Machin: "I move tliat the communication be forwarded to the Tariff Commission." Tho chamber merely received the resolution and took no action.
