WORK AND WORKLESS
IMPROVEMENT IN BRITAIN
(British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, Ist June. . I here are fewer unemployed in Great Britain at present than at any time durmg^the last seven years. The Ministry of Labour's figures show that the total number on 23rd May was 978.200, this 1 being 28,817 fewer than in the previous week and 813,479 fewer than a year ago. The total is just below that recorded in December, 1920. The worst point was reached in Juno of the following year, when there were 2,500,000 persons on the unemployment registers. ■Since then there has'been a steady, though gradual, improvement, checked only by the general strike and coal dispute last year. So far as the, figures ' reflect industrial conditions, they infci-" cate that trade as a whole has: recovered from the past year's stoppages and that the improvement is continuing' The cost of living figures also now look better in Groat Britain than at any period in'the last tea yearf.
