PETROL TAX BUILDS ROADS
All but four States—lllinois, .Massachussetts, New Jersey, and New. York. —collect on tho gasoline sold within their borders a tax ranging from 1 to 5 cents a gallon, states the "New York Times." Although a form of sales tax, it is- generally .conceded that the gasoline tax-is really a type of road\toll juid that its yield and earnings reflect more or less directly the use made of- the highways by motor vehicles. The disposition of the funds collected in this man ncr varies in different States. An analysis of the figures of twenty-one States mad£ V>y Henry K. Trumbower. economist of tho United States Bureau of Public Roads, shows that 89 per cent, of the net gasoline tax receipts is used for the feonstruction and maintenance" of rural highways. .'."-. ." .
