♦ • DUNEDIN URGING ACTION (By TtUfrtph.) (Special to "Th« Evcnlnt Post.") DTJNEDIN, 26th May. A meeting was held to consider the unemployment problem. It was stated that the average number of men employed by the City Corporation Works Department last year was 418, representing a total wage till of £92,868 forVthe year. The major portion of that was paid out 6t loan money. The department had expanded its expenditure -to meet the, unemployed position by doing practically, last year two years' work, and the only source of expenditure the department had left was £31,448, being the balance of a works loan of £200,000. That had been scheduled for expenditure over the current year. The Drainage Board last year employed 260 men. The wage bill totalled £62,383. : (By Telegraph.— Pnm AnocMtm.) DUNEDIN, 26th May. In view of the;unemployment situa-1 tion developing critically the Mayor has telegraphed to the Prime Minister urging the Bailway Department to put in hand the duplication of the DunedinPort Chalmers railway. ' ■ •• • A telegram was also sent to Mr. Furkert (chairman of the Highways Board) urging him to declare the Port Chalmers road a main highway, as men could then be immediately employed.
