SHOP ASSISTANTS
CLAIMS FOR NEW AWARD
Claims made by the New Zealand Federated Shop Assistants' Industrial Association of Workers for a new award were considered by a Conciliation Council to-day. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. P. Hally) presided, and the assessors were:—For the employees, Messrs. A. W. Croskery, W. Batchelor, T. O. Byrne, T. Goodall, H. J. Mortensen, and P. Salmon; for the employers, Messrs. W. E. Anderson, A. Smith, 11. C. South, H. C. Hassell, G. Crowe, W. 11. Boyes, and B. L. Hammond'.
The employees asked that the wage for male assistants should be £5 10s per week and for female assistants £.3 15s per week. The employers that the rates should be Hi 15s and £2 12s Cd respectively. A wage of £5 per week was asked for in the case of storcmen, the employers suggesting that the rate should bo £4 per week. The employees also asked that the wages for branch managers should range from £.7 to £S 10s per week and for departmental managers from £6 10s to £8 per week.
