VERDICT SET ASIDE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

GREYMOUTH, This Day. Mr. Justice Adams • gave his reserved decision in a compensation claim heard at the last sitting of the Supreme Court here in connection with the death of Peter Carmody at Brown's Creek Sawmill at Inangahua through a fiddling saw mishap. A claim of £3000 was made by the Public Trustee on behalf of the deceased's children. The jury awarded £1000.

Mr. C. S. Thomas (Christchurch), the defendant's counsel, raised a non-suit point, which haß now been decided in the defendant's favour. The jury's award has been set aside on the ground that Carmody's death was caused by his own action in working the saw without authority.
