SHORTLY AFTER 'CLOSING' TIME

Damage to the extent of nearly £10 - 000 resulted .from a fire which broke out in the premises of Darby's Stores, Ltd., fancy goods retailers, early tonight. The shop is situa'ed in the centre of Hastings street. The outbreak was seen within a quarter of an hour after . closing, and it then had a strong hold. The flames spread through the building with remarkable rapidity and quickly consumed practically the whole of the stock, valued at about £7000.

During the last few days a start had been made to remove to new premises, and it was the intention to \-acato tho present shop at the'end of the month.. . , The building ' was of brick, two stones high. The interior suffered considerably. Only slight damage was done to the adjoining buildings. The insurance on the building and iiltings is £3500 in the Guardian Insurance ollice, and on tho stock £3500 m tho Guardian,. Phoenix, and United offices. Tho insurances on the stock were reduced by £2000 just a month ago on account of the quantity on hand at the time having been somewhat less than usual.
