WELLINGTON CLUB The Wellington Chess Club’s annual handicap tourney for the Petherick trophy has been won by Mr. F. Grady (Class III.), who-was successful when playing off the tie with Mr. E. S. Taylor (Class II.). This deciding game was so stubbornly contested that it required a third sitting. Mr. Grady, who-was the runner-up a year ago, has received several congratulations, his success being very popular. There have, in all, been three “Petherick” trophies, the names of the winners being as follow:—(a) Gold medal, won by F. W. C. Barnes (a son of Mr. R. J. Barnes, who, as Btated above, won five of the earlier tourneys), and 1926 F. Grady. For the benefit of new readers it may be added' that the late Mr. Edward Wade Petherleb, who died on Christmas Day, 1915, aged 70, was for several. years a very popular president of the Wellington Chess Club, and vas also one of its, most generous supporters. The members of the Ngaio, Chess Club 1 held their fourteenth annual general meeting m the local Town Hall on the 3rd instant, when there whs a good attend-, ance. Mr: F. J. Brooker (president) occupied the chair.. The annual report-indi-cated that the 1926-27 season had been a very successful one, and that never beforehad the club’s tourneys been so keenly contested. _ The tourney for the club championship ended in a tie, Mr. Ernest . H>cks winning from Mr. A. B. Topp, m the p]ny*off. Ho is accordingly congratulated on holding the Watts Challenge Cup—a very handsome trophy—for the second year in succession. The junior championship was won by Mr. Herewnrd lopp, Mr. C. G. Glenday being tlie run-ner-up. The prizes m the annual handicap tourney were won as follow:—First, i ‘ A ,c ? da y,i Becond > F - J- Brooker; third, J. A. Glasgow. The club rpn a candidate in the local queen carnival, viz., Miss Oracle Brooker, a daughter of the president. Her candidature was successful, and alio wns duly crowned queen of the carnival. The balance-sheet shows a small profit on the year s transactions, despite the fact that thero has been a slight decrease in memberslup. llie report and bnlance-shect were adopted unanimously. The president stressed the need for new members, and it was decided to extend a cordial invitation to all chess ; players in the Ngaio-Khandallah-Johnsonville area to join up, arid thereby strengthen the club’s hands. Hicks. It was decided to hold three tourneys, viz., senior, junior, and handicap, these to be on the same lines ns those held last .year. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to last years officers, their Services being greatly appreciated. b NORTH v. SOUTH. The annual fixture between Wellington Noith and Wellington South was continued last week, when some of the outstanding games were disposed of. The scores are now: North 35, South 18. "Games not accounted for by the end of the week are to be cancelled. The play in the final stages cannot, however, affect the result of the match, us a handsome win Pavers residing in the northern naif of Greater Wellington is assured.
