EMBASSY TO VATICAN
CHAMBERLAIN EMPHATIC
(British Official Wireless.) : RUGBY, 12th May. Sir Austen Chamberlain, Foreign Secretary, was askecl in the House or Commons whether the maintenance of the British Legation at the Vatican was now regarded as a matter of permanent.policy. He replied "Jtes." The Government, he said, had no intention of withdrawing the mission to the Holy See. They found it convenient to establish this delegation at a time of international trouble, and to withdraw it now would, he thought be almost an offensive action to adopt. Apart from that, whatever views they might hold individually about the Roman Church, there could be no doubt that the head of that Church represented a great force in the world and was venerated by many millions of British subjects. :
