A.' letter from the Westland Society was received by the Wellington Acclimatisation Society last night, stating that whitebaiters had asked the Southern Society to review its proposed pol» icy of distributing a largo quantity of trout fry this year, it being alleged that the trout were responsible for the decrease in the whitebait catch, which was of considerable commercial value to the district. The opinion of the Wellington Society was sought. It was stated by members that trout undoubtiXT Te c ln B°°a condition when the whitebait were running, but the decrease was probably due to the practice m the Hokitika river of running weirs out into the river to turn the jisn into the traps, a practice not allowed in any other part of the country, rather than to the suddenly increased depredations of trout.
