FOR BETTER MUSIC

(To th« Editor.)

Sir,—l read with interest'extracts from "Earnest's" letter re good music contained in your last Saturday's issue. As he •ays, there is amongst New Zealunders in general a sad lack of appreciation of good music, and I think that it is true that the average person in Wellington doesn't care what kind of music he listens to, so long as it is not good music. As soon as the word symphony or sonata is mentioned he U completely out of hig depth. One of the principal reasons for this it that New Zealamlers do' not often get the opportunity to hear orchestral music properly played. "Earnest" is evidently a strong supporter of the Wellington Professional, Orchestra, and rightly so. This organisation does not claim to be a hrstelass symphony orchestra, but its performances, are always worth listening to, and it deserves to be well attended by the public, for it provides Wellington people with their only chance of hearing classical music played by an orchestra of sufficient •lze to render such music effective. In time music will take its true place in the lives .of the people of New Zealand, the same as it has done in the old centres of the world, and when that time comes the Wellington Professional Orchestra will be looked back on as the pioneer of orchestral music in Wellington. Therefore I think it behoves the public of this city to give this struggling body its support and gee that it is not forced to go into recess, a result which must come if an organisation of this kind is not well supported by the public—l am, etc.,

LISTENER,
