Tho affair began in a small way, Chinese youths throwing stones at. Japanese sailors. Gangs of. Coolies joined in and attracted crowds by (be lower class. A light' ensued. 4 Soon afterwards k shout, went up outside that a .rickshaw coolie had been stabbed to death by Japanese Imperialists. Tho word was immediately Hashed to tho Rickskayr Coolies' Union and in a short time a thousand hate-maddened coolies began to attack the Japanese Concession. Tho cry went up every where: "Kill tho .Tapaneso! Murder tho Imperialists! The mob seemed to become mad with t'uvy. Tho six sailors wcro overpowered and carried to the union's headquarters iv the native city. Japanese in every district' of Hankow were set upon in the streets and beaten insensible. Some were killed. One woman, who had given birth to a child'a few days before, was dragged into the street and killed by a mob now filled with blood-lust. Hestaurants, stores, homes, and oilices were pillaged, before the Japanese Consul-General ordered armed forces ashore from three gunboats. A few squads of marines lauded..
