LOWER HUTT COUNCIL
Lenders for new bridge
The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held yesterday. Present. Mr. W. T. Strand (Mayor), and Councillors A. M'Bain, "W. Meldrum, E,.Waldie, H. G. Teagle, E. \V. Hunt, J. Mitchell, A. Grierson, and A. J. Hobbs.
_ The Mayor reported on the deputation to the Minister of Public "Works regarding the subsidy for the proposed bridge.
Mr. Strand stated that he thought the time had arrived to call for tenders for the bridge. The Hutt County Council had, he noticed, refused to contribute, there-' fore it might be necessary to ask that a Commission be set up. He was reluctant, however, to take such a step' at the present stage, and it 5 seemed a great pity that while all the other bodies were apparently in agreement, the Hutt County Council should be the only one to prevent an agreement being arrived at without the cumbersome work of a Commission.
Councillors expressed the opinion that the setting up of a Commission would be of advantage to the Lower Hutt Borough, as' it was extremely likely that its share would not be as large as the contribution it J had declared its willingness to pay. The question of asking for a Commission was held over until the next meeting,, and -on the motion of the Mayor it was; decided to call for tenders immediately. . • The Eastern Hutt School Committee applied for a grant towards the school grounds. The Mayor said it was true that the grounds were most excellently kept, but he was afraid that the council would be establishing a dangerous precedent which.would result in all schools asking for grants. The council decided that it could not b t its ..way to comply with the request. '.- . ■ •
An application from the W.E.A. for a grant was held over for tho estimates.
The Public Trustee was appointed sinking fund commissioner for the £43,300 loan.
_ The owner of a property just within the brick area was given permission to add to a wood and iron factory with similar, material. " ■
■The Hutt Valley Horticultural Society advised that a committee had been set iip to consider and report upon the request cf the council that the society should, accept the care of certain, reserves. .
On the "recommendation of the Works Committee, street lights will be installed, if possible, at the end of Market street, and at the corner of Wilford and Eiddiford streets.
The Bylaws Committee recommended^ the prosecution of a Wellington builder for commencing a building without a permit. The committee also, recommended a consolidation of the bylaws. The recommendations were approved. .
