BASKETBALL
GREAT ADVANCE OF GAME
The annual meeting of the Wellington Ladies Basketball Association was held last Friday at Gilby's College, when the retiring president Miss -M. E. Armstrong presided. , ■
lhe annual, report showed that the game had made great strides during the past year, 71 registered teams playing during the season, an increase of ten on year before. Difficulty, however, was again experienced in securing, a sufficient number of referees, a deficiency which is greatly hampering the progress of ! the game. A strong appeal was made to the clubs to give this matter their aernest consideration. "The financial poistion of the association has improved somewhat," said the report, "and the standard of play in Wellington is improving, although slowly. One hindering factor is the great number of small clubs, many with only one team. In these teams often will be found girls, whose, play would win them a place in a senior team, playing probably in the intermediate grade with other girls whose play reaches only junior, standard, resulting in individual play instead of team work. This could be obviated to some extent by the combining of several of the smaller clubs and a careful grading of the players into teams. To this there is, of course, the objection of sentiment—girls preferring to play together under the name of their owu organisation; but the matter is submitted for *he earnest consideration of clubs. The association desires to place on record its hearty appreciation and thanks for the support given to it throughout the year by the PreßS, and the other supporters who have displayed an interest in the- association."
The. following officers were elected, far this season:—Patrons; Miss Dunlop, Messrs. M'Lay, Shallcrass, and Waddilove; president, Miss M. E. Armstrong: vice-presidents, Miss G. Stai'k, Messvs. W. Campbell and R. Gardner; secretary, Miss D. Tait; assistant-secretary, Miss It. Taylor; treasurer, Misa R. Finch; non-officisil members, Misses Whisker, Benyon, East, and Storey.
Considerable discussion took place on tho proposal to establish a secondary schools' sub-association, and also on the suggestion that Hutt Valley grades be formed in the intermediate and junior sections, both matters being finally referred to tho incoming executive to deal with.
