OIL IN HARBOUR

ACTION TO BE TAKEN

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post") AUCKLAND, This Day. _ The Auckland Harbour Board has decided to take action against masters of the Union . Steam Ship Company's steamer Niagara and^the steamer West Henshaw for allowing crudo oil to escape into J;he harbour. In regard to the Niagara*, the board received letters from the town clerks of the boroughs of Devonport and Takapuna, and several residents of Takapuna, complaining that the beaches at Takapuna, Milford, Cheltenham, and elsewhere were strewn with crude oil, which made bathing practically impossible. The report of the harbourmaster on the question stated that a nuisance had been caused .by a quantity of crude oil escaping from the Niagara. The chairman (Mr. H. K. Mackenzie) stated that oil from the West Henshaw also had polluted the harbour. It was decided to instruct the board's solicitors to take action in both, cases.
