LABOUR MAYOR'S OPINION

QHRISTCHUBCH, 16th March.

Interviewed in Christchurch as to what he thought of the Duke of York, the Rev, J, K. Archer, Mayor of Christchurch, gave his opinion in the form of a "message to his brother Labourites in Australia."

"My association with the Duke," he said, '' convinces me that he has a very impressive personality that grows upon one all the time.' Undoubtedly he is immensely interested in social and economic conditions, and desires to see exactly hoM the workers of the Dominion are housed, and .also how they are looked after, during their hours of employment. This desire is spontaneous and sincere. It is not at all make-be-lieve. ■ •. ■

"What lie seems to wish is to see for himself whether or not wo in these aew countries are perpetuating the undesirable conditions of the Homeland in our industrial undertakings. It is to be hoped that his investigations in this direction will proye satisfactory. He certainly has gone deeply into tho subject, and is far keener to see living and working conditions than showplaces. There can be no doubt that all visits of this kind . will very greatly help in welding together tho different parts of the Empire. A particularly noticeable feature of the Duke's character is .that it makes a special appeal to men and. to working men possibly more than, others,'-?
