The surprising total of £80,561 was realised at Christie's by the sale of the Russian State jewels, de ribed as the rarest collection of gems brought into f auction room/They were mostly of a datefrom the eighteenth century, and therefore belonged to a period removed from the late reigning family, though the nuptial crown was used in more recent ceremonial functions. There was a terrific rush, mostly of women, to the sale. After spirited bidding the crown went to a Paris buyer for £6100, the bidding opening at £5000. More unimportant lots were grouped together, and brought £8000. Other prices were: Pair of diamond bracelets, 'i 3400; diamond necklace, £2700; green jasper snuff box, £2600; emerald and brilliant ornament, £4300; large oval brilliant £11,800; diamond, sapphires and pearl brooch, £7500; diamond tiara, £4200; court sword, £700.
