POLICE RAID
BOOKMAKING ALLEGED
(By 'Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRiSTCHUECH, 16th March. Detectives raided premises in Cathedral Square, alleged to be used as a common gaming-house, this afternoon. Armed with i search /warrant, Detec-tive-Sergeant Young and Detective Mayno went to Room 11, Royal Exchange Buildings, Cathedral Square, occupied by John Henry Bott, aged 54, and seized a largo quantity of materials which the detectives allege wore used for bookmaking. Two men who were in the room at tho time of the raid were taken , into custody. The room presented ttie appearance of a< printing office, thero behi£ two addressograph machines, typewriters, a tape machine, cheque books, ledgers, and office appliances of all' kinds. While tho detectives were in tho room several telephone calls were received, which wero answered by the police, -The prints of _ names on the' addressograph machines number many hundreds. As,a result of the-raid, John Henry Bott and William Henry Cousins, aged 27, appeared before Mr. S: Hurst Seager, J.P,,Bott being charged with .-occupying a common gaming-house, and Cousins with assisting him. Both men were remanded to appear, in the Magistrate's Court to-morrow. Bail was "fixed in self £100 each and one surety ol: ;CIOO each.
