LONDON, 11th March,

In the House of Commons Miss Lawrence (Lab.) moved that-, in view of the growing menace of competition, it was incumbent that the League of Nations should seek ;i common agreement to reduce air forces. She said the Gov-

eminent ought to initiate proposals to this end for the forthcoming Disarmament Commission.

Sir Philip Sassoon (Under-Secretary for Air), replied that, apart from the Government's desire to sec the progress of general disarmament, they were sincerely anxious to see the limitation of air armaments, but their attitude must be governed by the insistent demand for inter-Imperial air communications, and the imperative need for adequately protecting the centre of the Empire. "We could not act alone or take the initiative on a question of air disarmament. There must be a general movement, based on a- formula accepted by the other Powers. Until then we must take adequate precautions for the safety of the civil population. The amendment was rejected by 112 votes to Go.
