UP AGAINST IT

DESTROYER AT WUHU

(Sydney Sun Cable.)

'SHANGHAI, 10th March. "We cannot hold out much longer. Essential to send help," was the dramatic message signalled from the British warship Wolsey during the rioting at Wuhu on 9th March. The message was picked up by the destroy ■ Emerald, stationed at Nanking. Instead of relaying the appeal to Shanghai, and

awaiting the Admiral's orders, the Emerald acted on her own initiative, and signalled the admiral: "Proceeding to Wuhu immediately," and was alreadyon the way when the admiral's orders supporting tho action readied Nanking. It appears that the Wolsey landed a party to protect the evacuation of women and children, and was then forced to land another body to subdue the rioting. ' The rioters, realising the smallness of the Wolsey's forces, stoned the* sailors. Apparently tho trouble died down.
