SALVAGED CARGO

BIDS FROM CHRISTCHURCH

(By Tilegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post")

AUCKLAND, 11th March. Ouc hundred curious people, and four or five who came expressly to buy, assembled beside the steamer Northumberland at the Calliope Dock yesterday for tho auction sale of the first batch of salvaged cargo. The bulk of the offering consisted of drapery, but, although representatives of two Queen street shops occasionally joined in the bidding, nine-tenths of the. goods were sold to a large Christchurch firm. The buyer for this firm made purchases in excess of £2000, and at times a dozen lots would go to him in succession. A small quantity of hardware met with more competition.
