The monthly report of the engineer (Mr. A. H. Benham) stated that on the Main East roaa the bituminous penetration portion between Upper Hutt and Akatarawa had been ro-grit-fcid and the running planking on the small bridgo near the Silvorstream overbridgo had been removed. ; Ordinary maintenance work had been carried out on the portions of the Main West road not yet taken over from the contractors, and the bridge at the Paraparaumu creamery had been widened and redecked. Ordinary maintenance work had also been carried out in the Epnni, Heretaunga, Horokiwi, Mangaroad, Taupo, Wainui-o-Mata, and Wharoroa ridings. On the Main East road, the section south of the Upper Hutt boundary had been surfaced by the Suburban Highways' Board, with the exception of the piece immediately affected by the erection of the Silverstream bridge. Plan 3, estimates, and specifications had been completed for the widening of the portion of the Taita Gorge unaffected by the proposed railway construction, and had been submitted to the Main Highways Board for consideration and approval. On the Main West road, the contractors for the widening and metalling had, during the past month, been confiiiin<r themselves to the widening and sul° grado work. It was their intention to push well ahead with this 1 portion of the work boforo attempting further metalling, in. order to allow for any subsidence to take place before the metal was placed in position. This method, it was thought, would be more satisfactory to both the contractors and the council. In connection with the sealing at Paekakariki, ninety-six chains had received the first coat sixty chains the second coat, and twenty-six chains south from M'Kay's crossing were receiving their first seal coat. The balance of the first two miles twelve chains should be completed this month, and then a start would be made at Horokiwi.
The report was' adopted A suggestion from the Lower Hutt Borough Council, that the borough fire brigade should be paid a subsidy of £5 a call m respect of fires in the county, was agreed to.
