CHAMPIONS COMPETE

KOSE WINS TWO EVENTS

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NAPIER, pth March. Several visiting athletes and cyclists of npte competed at the sports meeting in Napier this afternoon and put up creditable performances. Rose, the champion miler from Masterton, had little serious opposition in the two-mile flat, and this, added to the fact that a fairly strong wind prevailed, made conditions unsatisfactory tor record breaking. Hose appeared again in the mile handicap, which he won after a good last lap in which Whimp (Hastings) made the champion exert himself over the last hundred yards. Grose (Canterbury) won the heat in the half-mile cycle, but was unplaced in the final.' Grose discontinued after hail the distance of the two-mile event had been covered and left T. Oakley (Masterton) to win fairly comfortably from the local competitors. The three-miles cycle handicap was an interesting race. Grose and Oakley, both on scratch, after catching the leaders allowed Sutton to pace them until entering the last lap. Then the champions went away with a great turn of speed, Oakley a length in the lead. The Masterton man looked as though he would leave even Grose well behind, but the latter had something in reserve also and made Oakley go to win by a little over a length. One of the attractions of the afternoon was a race in which Eastwood (Wellington) ran 440 yds against a local ladies' relay team.- He was not disgraced by finishing a couple of yards behind the girl who took the last 110 yds. Each ladytook Eastwood along at a fine pace, and the event greatly interested the large gathering of spectators. Principal results:— ■ '
