HUTT VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL.
The annual meeting of the Hutt Valley High School Parents' Association was held at the school on Wednesday evening, when between forty and fifty parents attended and showed a keen interest in the work the school is doing. The association wa3 formed late last year, and has up to the present been able to hold only one function (parents' 'day), which took place in December, when £22 5s 9d was raised. This amount, with subscriptions received, made about £30 available for the use of the school.. It was announced that this money, together with that already in the hands of the Board of Governors, would make the purchase of a piano possiblel Mention was made of the growth of the school. The new building has been occupied since the middle of last year, and already the accommodation is taxed. It is therefore hoped that ;he remainder of the building will be erected shortly to allow for the expansion that is taking place in the district. ' . Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows:—President, Mr. Carnie; vicepresidents, Mrs. Burrell, Messrs. Hutchinson, and Henderson; secretary, Mr. Giesen, and a committee of fifteen. It was decided to have a garden fete on 26th -March, the residence 'of Mrs. E. Reynolds having been kindly lent for this purpose, and it is the intention of the association to have a big day. Committees were appointed to look after the various stalls, games, and entertainments. The pupils of the school are to give an exhibition of folk dancing, physical drill, basketball, and dramatic work. This is always interesting, and considerable merit was shown by the pupils at a concert given by them recently. Funds raised at this fete will be applied to the beautifying of. the school grounds.
A beacon of 1,000,000,000 candle-power, said to be the most powerful in the world, was inaugurated recently on Mont Valerien, a hill near Paris, where it has been erected to facilitate air navigation.
