MUSSOLINI AND THE FASCISTS
(To the Editor.)
r ? U'i~i ? m tlme t0 time articles are published dealing with Mussolini and the Fascists, and denouncing him in the strongest terms—also his practices. The last to enter the lists is Sir. H. G. Wells, who spares not his words in describing him as an actor in appearance and deeds, and further goes on to say that the future of Italy and the world in general will suffer "l uch TT by hit. administrations. Our friend, Mr. H. G. Wells, is entitled to his opinior.s—so are others. I Bpent b« months in Italy, seeing and travelling over every part of it that was worth seeing, and at the same time having every opportunity to see the effects of the rule of Mussolini and Ins Fascists. From my observations all I can say is that he is a superman and one of the cleverest in power in any part of the world at the present time It is owing to his efforts that Italy has so quickly regained her footng, and no other conutry can boast-of "such progress since the war, ana,, what's more, this progress is likely to continue. At the same time I would also say that she is a better friend to the British Empire than she has ever been, and there is no doubt that in the near future she will be closely allied with us. The strangest of all things to me is why so many writers of British origin have shown, in their articles, such antagonism towards this man Mussolini. When one has travelled practically in all the great centres of the world and heard admiration expressed of himfrom all sildes this is all the more incomprehensible. Of course, the more a man is stoned, the more he is brought before the public eye, which causes it to pause, listen, and inquire. This is the reason I have written this letter.—l am, etc., * WALTER F. DARBY. Auckland, ;
