PICNICS.

Ihe Ponrua Menial Hospilul's patients' annual,: picnic was held on the hospital ground' on-,Friday in' perfect weatlier. Among those present were: Mr, F. Brady J-^r ioffioial visitor), Mesdames, M'Vicar and' Fraser,' ibv- Burnett, 0.8. E. (Eed Cross),. Major; Watson (secretary of the .Returned . Soldiers' Association), and Messrs; Ei Windley (chau-man of the Mukara County Council)/and A. Trask. A large and- varied programme for ■ the patients was interspersed with events f*c the staff. The stall' headed by Mr. Quill (head 'attendant) and Miss Ogilvie (head matron), all worked hard to make the day a success and their efforts were well rewarded by the results. Music was supplied by the Mental Hospital Orchestra. The officials were the following: Secretary, Mr F. Goldsmith;: committee, Messrs. Brigijs! Walhs, Stewart, 1 Colley, Patersou, Jones Uark, Kiodan, and Greig; handicappcr Jlr. W.,8. Hicks; starter, Mr. T. w' Leslie; judges, Messrs. Quill, Owen, Gray, and Hassell. Details o£ the staff events are as follow:—100yds handicap: Sharman (syds), 1; Goldsmith (oyds), 2; A. Smith (3yds), 3. 220yd8 handicap: A. Smith, (10yds), 1; Fitzgerald (15yds), 2; Dr. Evans (syds), 3. 120 yds hurdles: L. Thompson (syds), 1; Sharman (syds), 2; Jackson (10yds), 3. High jump: R. Smith and Sharman (dead-heat). Dr. Tilyard, the superintendent of the Mental Hospital, stated r.t the end of the day that he felt sure that everyone had worked hard to make the day a success, and to have brought a few happy hours to those in their care.

The employees of the British United Shoe Machinery Company of Australia Proprietary, Eitd., held their annual picnic at the Trentham Racecourse on Saturday, under very, pleasant weather conditions. Ti;g-o£-war (office v. mechanics):: Office. Ladies' nail-driving competition: Mrs. W. Denton; 1; Mrs. Johnson, 2. Three-legged race (mixed): Hancock and Miss Reveirs, 1; Hazel Denton and Charlie Johnson, 2 Wheelbarrow race: Hancock and Miss Reveirs, 1; Oharlton and Miss B. Hunter, 2. Ladies' catch-the-train race: Miss Bi Hunter, 1. Ladies' balloon race: Mrs. J. M'Kinley, 1: Mrs. Johnson, 2. .Men's .balloon race: Weeds, "1. The result of the ladies v. men's cricket match ended in a popular win for ■ the ladies. The B.U.S.M.C. Challenge Shield was won by the office staff. At the close o£ the sports the priz«s were presented by Mrs. J. Walmsiey.'
