General Sir Alexander Godley pays a special tribute to the services, 'in peacetime in New Zealand and in wartime abroad, of Major-General C. W. Melvill, the predecessor of tlie present >.e\v Zealand Commandant, General Young. General Melvill was the son of Lieutenant Melvill, who, with Lieutenant Coghill, saved the colours at Isandlwana in 1899, when in the Zulu War one of Getewayo's impis wiped out a detachment of British troops, only 40 out of 800 escaping.
