Owing'to this season's apple crop being late in maturing only 30,000 cases of applet .have been sent from Nelson for export.. At this time last year theie was a great accumulation of fruit in Wellington awaiting shipment. The Mahana. which was expected to load 35,000 cases, had to leave Wellington /with only 8001) fases. The Nikau has been chartered to take over 4000 cases from here to catch the Mahana at Lytteltbn for London on Tuesday.' Residents oi-..Stoke, are holding a public meeting on Tuesday evening to protest against the proposed mental hospital extensions, in the residential area. ' After a clearing sale of stock, etc., at Golden Downs, this week, a meeting of Crown tenants was held, and the following resolution' was unanimously carried: "It is the opinion of Crown tenants present that Crown land in this district is settled on an impossible basis from the point of view of the tenant, and this meeting commends the action of the progress League in appointing a committee to inquire into Crown land settlement. The Nelson City Council on Friday evening received a report from the resident. Public Works engineer (Mr. May), stating that' he had inspected, in company, with Mr. Lyttlejohn (City Engineer;, the. cliff face on the landward side of the Rocks road near the city boundary. The report dealt fully with the condition of the cliff face, and the danger from further slips,, and recommended what should be done to prevent slips and make the road sttfe.. It was resolved to thans the Public Works Department for allowing the engineer to report. Considerable discussion took place during which tht Mayor stated that to find the £3500 required for' the work meant raising a loan, and this would take time. If it : was not carried and the road was considered dangerous, it would have to be closed. It was decided to obtain.a legal opinion as to the council's liability in case of accident, and it was ' decided that a round-table conference be held among the council, Harbour Board, Tahunanui Town Board, and representatives of the Main Highways Council, to deal with the whole matterfl " '
