CUP TO FOOTFALL COMI€; SONG WINS PUBLICANS' \ HANDICAP (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") ' DUNEDIN, j 10th February. There is • a tradition that the Dunedin Cup has. never been run on a wet day. When the early morning of to-day was ushered by a drizzling rain the exception rather than the rule seemed to be the case. Towards upon the weather, although still doubtful,, behaved itself, as one might say, and no punedihl Cup card was got off under such:-climatically enjoyable conditions. There was an excellent attendance, and the card provided, some very fine racing. i, The Elderslie-bred Comic Song added 'a Publicans' Handicap to his successes, and there was no doubt about the merit of the win,' as - nothing in the field.. proved capable of giving a serious challenge at the finish. 1-" ■ Vaward was sent all the way in the Dunedin Cup, and if a shade less use had been made of Him, success might have been'his instead of a narrow margin defeat. Mr. C. G. Dalgety has been such a • staunch patron of the Dunedin Jockey Club that everyone was pleased at the success of his dolours. When Mr. A. C. Hanlon asked Mrs; Hanlon to present the handsome gold cup which went with the stake, the applause which went up had a really genuine ring. There is no doubt that the best horse on the day won, but with a better run. iPink, Note may have created a surprise. Rapier was going well when he unshipped, his rider about five furlongs from home, ;but nevertheless form on the Wellington Cup running pointedto the winner as the most dangerous amongst the top-weights. Jericho won the Champagne Stakes like a good colt, as he was-under pressure three furlongs from home, and stayed on well to head the local colt. It was, by the way,■ bad luck forgone of our local stables to just miss success in both the Dunedin Cup and Champagne Stakes. / AUTUMN HURDLES. En Route and Giinca'se were struck out of the.Autumn Hurdles, in which Kaikahu went out a slightly better favourite than- Sayonara. Radiac- made the early running from Sayonara, who was jumping badly, and apparently iwas short of a ■few..schooling lessons. Kaikahu was running close to the leaders until 1 reaching the back stretch, where Coastguard took charge, and led • round the top and into the straight. Sayonara dropped back.at the half-mile post, and Coastguard, leading over the last hurdle^ came on and won by two lengths from; Kaikahu, who appeared to beat: Sayonara by a similar distance, but the judge third place to'Bonomel. They were-all under pressure in the run home, and Coastguard for once in a way jumped well, and proved to have too much pace for the op"position. ... TRIAL STAKES. Lady Tractor was struck out of the Trial Stakes, for'which Master Clarence went out favourite. Wild Work, Master Clarence, and Great Spear'showed the way along the back, and at the home turn Wild Work, Master Clarence, and Princess Mafalda were racing together in the lead., Princess Mafalda and Wild Work retired in the straight, where Master Clarence took charge and won by over a length from Royal Saxon, who beat Eyed Ova by: half a length. Wild Work was close up fourth. Eyed Ova struck trcuble twice during the race, and did well' to finish close up. ; . . PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. Thorndale finished up favourite for the President's Handicap. Jolly GSad was slow to move at the rise of the barrier, and Flaming Ray soon took charge, and set a solid pace all the way. She finally resisted a challenge from Calcite and won by a very narrow margin. Gay Sonnet, Thorndale, Boughleen.Dhoun, and Brightling were well enough placed in the early stages to hold a winning chance, but they failed to stay on. Jolly Glad made up a lot of ground when rounding the top, but after getting near the leaders faded i out. Wise Counsellor apparently broke down in the race, as he finished nearly the length of the straight behind the rest of the field. PUBLICANS' HANDICAP. All on the card went to the post for *the Publicans' Handicap, in which Countersign finished \ip favourite. They were a well-behaved lot at the barrier, which rose to a good start, from which Dancing Days was first to shew and Bright Mark soon ran into second place. Dancing Days led Bright Mark along the back, with Lava, Comic Song, Glentruin, Nincompoop, Solrose, and Couuiersign close up. Dancing Days led Bright Maxi into the straight, with Comic Song, Glentruin, Lava, Corn Money, and Solrose following. Once in line for home Comic Song; came on and won comfortably by two lengths from Solrose, who drew up and beat Lava by half a length for second place. Countersign was another half a length.-away, and then in a bunch came

Corn Money, Nincompoop, Rob, and Bright Mark. DUNEDIN CUP. Set Sail was withdrawn from the Dunedin Cup because . her near fore foot, which had been pricked- by a nail, developed heat, which travelled into the fetlock joint after her gallop on Wednesday. Mr. L. C. Hazlett's pair, finished up favourite, with Rapier next in demand. When the field got going Vaward was raced away into a commanding lead, and as they ran along the back was over a half a dozen lengths in front of Battlement, Footfall, Rapier, Centrepiece, and Count Cavour. Going up the rise Vaward was still over four lengths in front of Footfall, and they were weM clear of the rest of the field. Once in the straight Footfall came , on, and catchrng Vaward a few strides from the post, beat him by a short neck: Pink Note ran past the beaten lot and finished half a dozen lengths away third; and then came Baldoiva, Centrepiece, and Battlement. Overdrawn and Count Cavour both faded out, and Rapier dropped his rider at the far turn. Pink Note ran the best race of the field, and must have been hard tt\ beat if he had been on terms with the others in the first quarter of a mile. Too much use was made of Vaward, who must have been very hard to beat if he had b«en kept with a little in reserve for- a final effort. CHAMPAGNE STA.KES. Jericho was made a better favourite than Arrowy in the Champagne Stakes., Ark Royal led the way when the field settled down, but, Jericho, who was under pressure three furlongs from home, stayed on -well and got up to win by a short half length. Arrowy was a head away third, and Broadmoor next. BERWICK HANDICAP. The imported mare Spean Bridge, went out favourite for the Berwick Handicap, but M'hen it came to business Overhaul won nicely after being well placed throughout. Serotina was one of the early leaders'but faded out, and Wingatui stayed on well, and, : finishing second, cut King Balboa out- of the money. Gold Mint made up. ground and finished close to the placed lot. Royal Kilt and Shandre were slow to move at the start and failed to make up their lost ground. Spean Bridge was well enough placed in the race, but did not prove good enough. STEWARDS' HANDICAP. Hurdy Gurdy, All British, Blue DraRoon, and Fairy Herald made the early running in the Stewards' Handicap. John Bradbury joined the leaders at the home turn, where Ophir was moving up. John Bradbury came on' in the straight and won handsomely. • ■ 8.13, 3.
