CAUSE OF DISASTER
PROBABLE FAILURE OF PLATE
(Received 10th February, noon.) f SYDNEY, This Day. The body of Christie, a member of the Galava's crew, was found at Terrigal last night. ' The Duckenfield was unablo to lower a boat when she saw the bodies as the sea was choppy. She waited till dawn, but saw nothing, as the ship had drifted too far. A revised list of the Galava 'a missing is now as follows: J. Hansen, Benjamin Gilkes, A. Brown, and Pietro Spagnolo. .The cause of the disaster is a mystery, but significance is attached to the statements of survivors that the engineroom, which was aft, was quite dry while the forepart of the vessel was filling rapidly. Members of the crew hurriedly examined the hatches and •found that water had entered there. The consensus of opinion' is that one of the plates in the forepart became detached through the weight of coal, allowing water to flood the ship. ' Most of the crew managed to dive from the side, but it is feared that the missing were drawn under when the vessel disappeared.
