WANGANUI DEFEATS

MANAWATU.

PALMEBSTON N., This Day. The first challenge match for the Christie Cup was played at Wanganui on Saturday, when Manawatu suffered defeat by 9to 14. The trophy was recently donated by Dr. Christie (Wanganui) for competition between the Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu, Hawkes Bay, and Wairarapa associations.

Details are as follow, Manawatu players mentioned first:— Men's Singles.—Andrews defeated Lanipe, 6-2, 6-4; M'Donald lost tj Wheeler, 0-6, 2-6; Thompson lost tD Barkman, 1-6, 6-2, 6-8; Hooper beat Marshall, 6-4, 6-4; Guy beat Jones, 6-3, 9-7; Clem lost to Anderson, 1-6, 6-0, 4-6. Men's Doubles. — Andrews and Thompson lost to Lampe and Wheeler, 3-6, 3 : 6; M'Donald and Hooper lost to Barkman and Jones, 3-6, 2 6. Ladies' Singles.—Miss D. Haggitt beat Miss Cohen, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1; Miss Litehfield lost to Miss Myers, 2-6, 3-6; Miss Watson lost to Mrs. Richardson, 2-6, 2-6; Miss Pitt lost to Mrs. Newman, 0-6, 1-6; Misß N. Astle beat Mrs. Barkman, 6-5, 6-2; Miss O. Haggitt lost to Miss Cox, 5-6, 6-3, 4-6.

Ladies' Doubles.—Misses D. and O. Haggitt beat Misses Calver and Myers, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4; Misses Litehfield and Watson beat Mrs. Kiehardson and Miss Cox, 6-5, 5-6, 6-2; Misses Pitt and Astle lost to Mesdames Barkman and Newman, 4-6, 6-5, 4-6. Combined Doubles.—Andrews and Miss D.
