NELSON NEWS

NELSON, 3rd February. Mr. Jonathan Brough, a pioneer settler and .explorer of Nelson and adjacent districts, died on Sunday last. The late Mr. Brough, who was a native of Cumberland, England, at the age of 19 left for Australia, where he engaged in gold digging. He arrived in Nelson in 1567, and was one of the first seven explorers in the Buller district. He became a contractor and carried out many works in the back country. Later, he was overseer and inspector for the New Government, and held this position for 34 years. He supervised the construction of roads and bridges in the back portion of the Nelson Province. The late Mr. Brough was well known as a naturalist, and as an entomologist did a. great deal of research work. Many specimens collected by him are in various museums in New Zealand. He also contributed ■ many articles to the Press. Mr. Brough' leaves a widow, one son, Mr. J. Brough, of Motueka, and two daughters, Mrs. George Hendry and Miss D. Brough, Nelson.
Two other old settlers, Mr. William Dron, of Waimea West, and Mr. Charles Andrews, of Nelson, died this week.
The rainfall in Nelson for' January totalled 2.18 in. The average for January in past years is 2.85 in.
The Iron Duke Sea Scouts are busy preparing for the inspection for Lord Jellicoe's Silver Trident Championships for Sea Scouts, which; takes place on Friday and Saturday next at their headquarters, Port Nelson.
