AT TRENTHAM

EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD

EACING

STAR STRANGER'S" GREAT. EFFORT

Some thrilling finishes were witnessed at Trentham on Saturday, and few people could recall a succession of more closely contested events. In quite a number only the judge could decide, the culminating point being reached in the Metropolitan Handicap, when Limited, Paperchase, Benzora, and Mimetic flashed past the past in what anyone but the most exacting would have called a straight line. Limited and Paperchase, however, had a very' slight fc|f °ver Benzora, who just headed Mimetic. Once again it was a triumph for ■Mr-H. Coyle, the handicapper. th I^l * hu Se crowd consequent on the public hoiday, and at times in some parts the enclosures appeared uncomfortably full. Speculation was very brisk, the JBT&Sm f y beiDg £78»943-10s, against ±78,203 last year. th«hLr raCk W-!S Very hard and fasfc. tut anL^r f S + ' \ lth One J -Or two exceptions, appeared to be standing up to it well Star Stranger put up an Australasian resmi «.*H Ra^ Dg ,Club Handicap, his -mm Wsec for the eleven furlongs being Tn« al™'n° f£ second better than that of aS y"reglstered at Brisbaae

MUNGAROA HIGH-WEIGHTY Mint Leaf, as befitting after his first days form, was backed down to a abort price, and justified it by winning. easily He looked a better horse for. his gallop on the first day. Probably Wedding March would.have extended him had® iTw . MTayish realised his mount was loafing with him in the early stages When shaken up Wedding March finished at a fTa ium P er a. nd ShoWed SUrprising pace Bennanee was tried out in front again, and stuck on fairly well. He is a big geld^ ing who might improve with age. Lady Passenger ran a really good race, always being in the p:cture. She should win a hurdle race at any time now. W f V°° ked. a P°ssitil'ty a furlong from home, but just failed to see out the journey. Capitulation ran a very fair race for a little over a mile, but in reality outside of Wedding March, nothL Baf a nCe with the winner, Mint ; TRIAL PLATE. Crown Area, a useful looking son cf Acre and Moorefield, who has not been m work any length of time, was much too good for this field, a weak one, as the race was run. He was a little lucky aoweyer, as Assurance appeared to be one or the victims, of a slow-moving barrier Sw? Practically last away, yet was up with the leaders forcing the pace at the SJ- a°l tw° furl°nga. He was still the third horse from the rails and in the van at the turn. Under these circumstances he did extremely well to finish second/and his backers can be accounted unlucky. One should not'detract too much however, from the merit of Crown Area's performance. ■ y Serotina looked a decided possibility a furlong from home, but she failed to run on. Crossbow ran a fair race, and Hym- . great his best. Kilmoyler also showed up for most of the way. Zarisee faded out badly m the straight. 4 JANUARY HANDICAP. , .Centrepiece made complete amends for his first day failure. He looked a better aorse, and received a clearer run. He still is inclined to run in under pressure and showed signs of this on Saturday but he is a. really good galloper, and won" comfortably. _ Rascal was held in until" very late, and then mushed fast. He has been unlucky lately in his races, for on Saturday again he did no* have the best of passages. Joy .Bird, ran another of her very consistent races, and was sticking on well at the end. Decoy Ilird's turn should not be far away.' Little H. Gilmer, who rode him on baturday, although a promising lightweight, was of not much use to such a big horse. A seven-furlong welter should Bmt Decoy Bird to a nicety. Royal Damon stayed on well, and ran a good race, tjorn Money failed to see the journey out. Penman was not sighted at any stage, and King the Bell was not going like a winner at any part of the race. King Smock lost his chance by a bad bump in the early part' of the race. NURSERY HANDICAP. Paleta shovred that class overcomes weight, for with all his 9.5, he was early in front, and not troubled to win. He ■will not be a3ked to tackle handicaps again, and may be raced in the rich two-year-old races in Sydney at Easter. He is in the A.8..C. classic races at the same tune so does not lack engagements. His is another case of beginner's luck, for he represents Mr. J. A. Todd's initial effort as an owner. Laughing Prince stayed on too well for m^n 'n?* ]- ust cut Otairi out of second money. Otairi was very much on his toes pr! or r1?- the,, start ' and took a good deal out of himself. Quietened down he will be a useful galloper. Tone stayed on well after beginning «]° wly- She has improved a good deal through the meeting. Wild Pigeon ran fa,™ %£ vuSho 1 v*'u*' being wide out at the turn. Thaw lost all chance through interference at the start. Chips had every RACING CLUB HANDICAP. Bi^ St, ra?ger came with a great rattle in. the straight, and although little Piuthair fought out every inch of the journey the b.g geldmg just had the advantage for £ 6 *?% J\ Wa! a Very £ast run rac <=> for iront Rank set a very hot pace in front, this being all in favour of Star Stranger, whose rider had him handily placed on the rails all the way. This was Sr 1 a r?? g ™sJ :)eßt effort since winning the A.J.C. Metropolitan. Although beaten Piuthair was not disgraced. RE. Manson rode her a patient race in behind Front ( Rank, going up to the latter at the turn. >■ At the distance it looked as if Piuthair would win, but Star btranger earned too many guns Footfall found the task of winnin" beyond him, but ran an honest race Alloway had every chance, but was not quite good enough, and much the same applies to Mask.. Merry Day, Fresco, and Count Cavour found the too solid jont t ?v nk was respnsible for the record established by Star Stranger She bowled along in front to some tune, running her first three furlongs in 38sec, halfS^ IDT? °sec, and seven furlongs in lmin 28sec. Under these circumstances she did shTdid t° finish-so close up as DOURb CUP/ Vesperus although he has not won lately, had not been overlooked by good judges, and as expected he always held a good position in the race. There is not ranch doubt that he was lucky to win 5? . Stormy not been hampered ronnd tft9 tea is SfipH fea»§ g»r«| fegtead

of being beaten by a nose by Vesperus. They are two really good gallopers, however, well up to the Douro Cup standard. Kilmiss surprised by finishing third, a placing not suggested by her High-weight Handicap performance on' the first day. Vertigerh ran a patchy race, and had he galloped freely all the way might have done a good deal better than finishing fourth. .. ■ ■

Outfit was always prominent, and ran really well, while" Starboard Light and Queen's Choice rattled on well at the end. Queen's Choice was the most unlucky runner of the race, for he was soon tailing the field, and was in a hopeless position with half a mile to go. . Kilmezzo and Battle Colours had their chances completely extinguished at barrierrise. Horomea and Kosenor were noticed m the middle stages, and Bronstell, Jemidar, Son o' Mine, and Gardant raced prominently to the turn from which point all four dropped right out. METROPOLITAN HANDICAP. As could be expected Limited ran in front all the way. Fifty yards from home he appeared to be well beaten, but pulled out another effort, and divided the major placing with Paperchase. The latter has yet to run a bad race. She came from a position in the rear to make her dead-heat Benzora justified his reputation from Taranaki, and was flying at the end. He appeared to be the unlucky runner. Mimetic was well enough placed all ihe way to have won. He did not appear to put much heart into his finishing effort, and possibly he is not too solid. Receipt ran a really good race, beina prominent all, the way. Father O'Flynn and Nadarino were found wanting and dropped out in the last furlong, and Cawnpore could not go the pace set. Licinius again struck trouble. He has been a most unlucky gelding, and is to have a short spell. CAMP HANDICAP. When Sagittarius was cantering along m front under a good pull a furlong from nome Ins army of backers were on stood terms with themselves. -R. J. Mackie asked Lady Ideal for an effort about 70 yards from the post, and before P E Jones on the favourite realised it the marenacl a slight advantage which he could not make up, Lady Ideal winning by half a head. It was a body blow to heavy backers, and it certainly looked a case of over-' confidence. Lady Ideal is very well now borne Lad ran a useful'race, and. Baby Bun always appeared to be having a good gallop in behind the leaders.. Royal Tractor showed a good deal of pace. Frivolous lost his chance at the post.
