WORKS BY JOHN GULLY.
There are now on exhibition in the Art Gallery, Whitmore street, two fine examples of the work of the late John Gully, painted in the year 1876. They are both views of the beautiful Waimea Valley, looking in different directions from the Dun Track. These works, -which originally were acquired by the late Mr. Brogden, who visited New Zealand in the 'seventies in connection with large railway undertakings, were recently purchased by Sir James Allen for the Government from the estate of a relative of Mr. Brogden. They are among the largest and most important of all' Gully's water colours, drawn with a wealth of artistic feeling and wonderful topographical accuracy. Art lovers of the present day marvel at the beauty of Gully's work, more particularly when they realise how limited were the sources of instruction available in his younger days. The paintings are to be on view in the Wellington Gallery for some three months, after which it is the intention of the Government to offer them for exhibition to the other main galleiies of. - the Dominions.
