DRAMATIC TRIAL
CATALAN CONSPIRACY
GARIBALDI DENOUNCED
VIOLENT SCENES IN COURT
(United Press Association.—Copyright.) PARIS, 20th January. The trial of Garibaldi, Macia, v and sixteen Catalans on a charge of conspiracy against the Government of Spain opened dramatically. The proceedings commenced by each prisoner reading a statement. •
Garibaldi, wearing the scarlet rosette or the Legion of Honour in his buttonhole, denied that he betrayed the Catalans, and accused Macia of inaccurately explaining tho plot. , Immediately a storm broke out, Macia indignantly repudiating .the allegation His council, M. Torres, denfuS Garibaldi as both an Italian and a Spanish agent. Garibaldi bellowed a denial, and M. Torres retorted' by reading Garibaldi's statements to the n °\ e-,,?° nilMl- added.: "Perhaps a Garibaldi, who is a member of the Legion of does not sign documents confessing the receipt cf Judas's thirty pieces of silver."
Garibaldi admitted that he had signed, the statements after thirty hours' examination, owing to fatigue f Torres: "You, a soldier, admit that tatigue caused you to break Sown. Be a man!"
The Court became a scene of tumult and the Judge .ordered a short suspension. After the proceedings were resumed, Benoit, Secret Police .Commissioner, made a statement that he had a. favourable report regarding the Catalans, but Garibaldi was an Italian agent provocateur, and-had .admitted that he feeoived 600,000 'lire from the Italian police.
Garibaldi shouted: "Nevertheless I am no traitor." '
The hearing was adjourned,
