(United Press Association.—Copyright.); LONDON, 17th January.' The death of Lord and Lady Bear, sted, within 2i hours of one another is announced. The couple had been ailing for many months. ' Lady Bearsted died last evening and her husband to-day.,
Lord Bearsted, first Viscount, was better known as Sir Marcus Samuels, one of the founders of the Shell Oil Company, with its great petroleum wells in. the East Indies and elsewhere. In 1915 he received an official vote of thanks from the Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty for "services of the utmost importance to the fighting forces at the present moment." His peerage was bestowed for eminent public and national servic«s. He held many honours, including that of Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour. He was born in _ 1853, and married in 1881 Fanny Elizabeth, only daughter of the late Benjamin Benjamin. His heir is Cap. tain the Hon. "Walter Horace Samuel. He leaves also two daughters.
