(Received 19th January, 11 a.m.)
CAPETOWN, 18th January.
A warm controversy continues over the Ernden incident. Many letters of protest have been published, but the general opinion is that the Emden's action was fully justified. It is now stated that the police did not request the use of the hose, but they admit that the crowd was unmanageable.
The commander, in an interview, expresses great regret, but says, that it was the only way of preventing a terrible tragedy. He acknowledges an extremely cordial reception in Capetown without a single unpleasantness.
